INTO THE CITY
Crashed down in the dead of night into a jungle of steel and concrete
This is the place where the subways go thru rabbit holes in the street
I stumble out of my twisted wreck and wipe the dust of my clouded mind
Some guy with a crazy smile appears, he says, "I know exactly what you
came here to find."
He leads me thru an alleyway right by some folks that he used to know
Stops by a door where some hobo sits, "This is the place, now I gotta
go."
The door flungs open and I'm pulled inside by a bouncer with a bearded face
She says, "You got a lot of guts, my dear, to even come near this place."
The dying sleepwalks today
Let this room wash away
All I see and all I crave
In a wheelchair sits the Last of the Mohikans, he's the employer, the man
with the grin
Looking up on the ceiling on a discoball, waiting for the show to begin
"Little girl with flaming feet, come down in the light where I can see
your face."
"Ol' man have you forgotten that I for a month or so haven't had a face."
Kicked out on the 99th street, there is the scarcrow throwing gospels around
"This is the beat of the heart that burns, we feel it all but don't hear
a sound."
"Country boy, it's all too late, this is the tool that will make you
kill."
"But don't let them catch you running adrift, you gotta stand very still."
The dying sleepwalks today
Let this room wash away
All I feel and all I crave
I ran down to the river just to find that the river was dry
A girl with porcelaine eyes grabbbed my knee, she said "Boy it ain't
worth a try."
"I can be a naughty girl, you've no idea what I can do to you."
Well, had I not been raised outside this town I'd be a naught boy too
And as we tried to break free came the morning
Like a gunshot right thru my head
But she can see no light
It came from out on the sea
And she went back into the city
So came the morning, oh yeah
